Rationale: Pesticide isomers are widely available in agricultural production and may vary widely in biological activity, potency, and toxicity. Chromatographic and mass spectrometric analysis of pesticide isomers is challenging due to structural similarities., Methods: Based on liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry, identification of cis-trans isomeric pesticides was achieved through retention time, characteristic fragment ions, and relative abundance ratio. Furthermore, theoretical and basic research has been conducted on the differences in characteristic fragment ions and their relative abundance ratios of cis-trans isomers. On the one hand, the cleavage pathways of six cis-trans isomers were elucidated through collision-induced dissociation to explain different fragment ions of the isomers. On the other hand, for those with the same fragment ions but different abundance ratios, energy-resolved mass spectrometry combined with computational chemical density functional theory in terms of kinetics, thermodynamics, and bond lengths was employed to explain the reasons for the differences in characteristic fragment ions and their abundance ratios., Results: A high-resolution mass spectrometry method was developed for the separation and analysis of cis-trans isomers of pesticides in traditional Chinese medicine Radix Codonopsis, and six pesticide isomers were distinguished by retention time, product ions, and relative abundance ratios. The limits of quantification of the six pesticides were up to 10 μg/kg, and the linear ranges of them were 10-200 μg/kg, with coefficients of determination (R 2 ) > 0.99, which demonstrated the good linearity of the six pesticides. The recoveries of the pesticides at spiked concentrations of 10, 20, and 100 μg/kg reached 70-120% with relative standard deviations ≤20%., Conclusions: It was demonstrated that the application of the method was well suited for accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis for isomers with different structures, which could avoid false-negative results caused by ignoring other isomers effectively., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Herein, we synthesized a novel N-doped carbon layer encapsulated Fe/Co bimetallic nanoparticles (Fe/Co-NC), which exhibited superior oxidase-like activity due to the facilitation of electron penetration and the formation of metal-nitrogen active sites. Fe/Co-NC could catalyze the oxidation of 3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to blue oxTMB. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) could catalyze the hydrolysis of thioacetylcholine to produce reducing thiocholine, which prevented TMB from oxidation. Thus, a portable hydrogel colorimetric sensor was developed for on-site and visual monitoring of AChE with the detection limit of 0.36 U L -1 , and successfully applied to detect AChE in human erythrocyte samples. Advances in flexible SERS substrates has made it possible to approach the ultimate goal of rapid in-situ monitoring of fruit and vegetable safety, but its vulnerability under laser ablation results in low utilization. In order to solve this problem, a 3D framework of TiO 2 -doped PVDF\PVP polymer was utilized to self-assemble gold-silver core-shell nanorods (Au@Ag NRs) to prepare a flexible SERS substrate with good physical stability and self-cleaning properties. This substrate showed excellent detection limit and recyclability after the detection of three pesticide residues in apple peel. The LOD of methyl-parathion (MP) was as low as 0.037 ng/cm 2 , with an RSD of 5.61 % for 5 cycle-detection. The recoveries of two additional pesticides thiram (TMTD) and chlorpyrifos (CPF) were 86.32 %-112.47 %. An eco-friendly biomass waste-derived magnetic material coated with a dual-dummy-template molecularly imprinted polymer was fabricated using aqueous ethanol as a green porogen, lower amounts of toxic compounds as template molecules, and tyrosine and tryptophan as biocompatible binary monomers. The binding characteristics and selectivity of the material toward pesticides were assessed. High adsorption capacities ranging from 150.11 to 509.09 mg g -1 and imprinting factors reaching 2.2 were achieved within just 30 s. The material was applied for extraction of organophosphorus and carbamate pesticides prior to HPLC analysis. Under the optimum conditions, low limits of detection and quantitation were achieved, with ranges of 0.05-1.49 μg/L and 0.18-5.00 μg/L, respectively. The established approach enables efficient analysis of vegetable and fruit samples, yielding satisfactory recoveries ranging between 80 and 110 %. Developing a straightforward method to remove pesticide residues from fruits is essential for food safety. In this study, ozone microbubble treatment was performed on three fruits (strawberry, cherry, and apricot) to remove four pesticide residues (emamectin benzoate, azoxystrobin, boscalid, and difenoconazole) while comparing removal efficiency. The concentration of hydroxyl radicals in different washing orientations was homogeneous at a concentration ranging between 8.9 and 10.2 μmol·L -1 . Under long washing time (18 min), strawberry, cherry, and apricot obtained higher removal rates of 51 %∼65 %, 51 %∼59 % and 24 %∼70 %, respectively. Moreover, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle (CA) revealed that apricot has better hydrophobicity, leading to a higher pesticide removal of 45 ∼ 84 % with less water and more vigorous washing. Notably, vitamin C content in fruits remain largely unchanged following ozone microbubble treatment. The exponential growth of the global population has resulted in a significant surge in the demand for food worldwide. Additionally, the impact of climate change has exacerbated crop losses caused by pests and pathogens. The transportation and utilization of traditional agrochemicals in the soil are highly inefficient, resulting in significant environmental losses and causing severe pollution of both the soil and aquatic ecosystems. Nanotechnology is an emerging field with significant potential for market applications. Among metal-based nanomaterials, copper-based nanomaterials have demonstrated remarkable potential in agriculture, which are anticipated to offer a promising alternative approach for enhancing crop yields and managing diseases, among other benefits. This review firstly performed co-occurrence and clustering analyses of previous studies on copper-based nanomaterials used in agriculture. Then a comprehensive review of the applications of copper-based nanomaterials in agricultural production was summarized. These applications primarily involved in nano-fertilizers, nano-regulators, nano-stimulants, and nano-pesticides for enhancing crop yields, improving crop resistance, promoting crop seed germination, and controlling crop diseases. Besides, the paper concluded the potential impact of copper-based nanomaterials on the soil micro-environment, including soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and microbial communities. Additionally, the potential mechanisms were proposed underlying the interactions between copper-based nanomaterials, pathogenic microorganisms, and crops. Furthermore, the review summarized the factors affecting the application of copper-based nanomaterials, and highlighted the advantages and limitations of employing copper-based nanomaterials in agriculture. Finally, insights into the future research directions of nano-agriculture were put forward. The assessment of chemical pollution in free-ranging living mammals is viable using remote biopsies and portrays a comprehensive scenario of environmental health. The Southwestern Atlantic Ocean holds incredible biodiversity, but it is under the constant and invisible threat of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) of anthropogenic origin, such as pesticides, brominated flame retardants, and industrial-use compounds (e.g., PCBs). Thus, this study aimed to assess the bioaccumulation of POPs (PCBs, DDTs, HCB, mirex and PBDEs) and natural organobromine compounds (MeO-BDEs) using gas-chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry in biopsy samples of Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis, n = 20) that inhabit and forage both inside and in adjacent areas to degraded (Guanabara Bay) and conserved (Ilha Grande Bay) coastal bays in the Southeastern Brazil. Among the studied compounds, PCBs were predominant in the contamination profile with median concentration of 97.0 μg.g -1 lipid weight (lw), followed by the sum of the p,p' isomers of DDT, DDD, and DDE of 11.0 μg.g -1 lw, the brominated flame retardants PBDEs of 1.6 μg.g -1 lw, and the other organochlorine pesticides mirex of 0.78 μg.g -1 lw, and HCB of 0.049 μg.g -1 lw. The MeO-BDEs were detected with a median concentration of 22.8 μg.g -1 lw. 85 % of the Atlantic spotted dolphins analyzed in this study presented PCB concentration that exceeded even the less conservative threshold limits for adverse health effects (41 μg.g -1 lw). This study shows that despite the conservation status of preserved bays, cetacean species foraging in these locations are still under increased threat. Lake Fuxian, the largest deep freshwater lake in China, has been suffering from increasing ecological and environmental issues along with the rapid urbanization and industrialization in the past 40 years. To better understand the historical pollution of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Lake Fuxian, comprehensive analyses of 209 polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners and 20 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were conducted in two intact sediment cores (Core V1 and Core V2). The total mass concentrations of PCBs ranged from 7.60 to 31.47 ng/g (dry weight basis) and 5.55 to 28.90 ng/g during the period of 1908-2019 in Core V1 and 1924-2019 in Core V2, respectively. PCBs exhibited a consecutive increasing trend from 1940s to 2019 in Core V1. The temporal trend of PCBs in Core V2 basically matched to the history of PCB usage and prohibition in China (increasing from 1940s to mid-1960s, a remarkable drop in mid-1970s, and then increasing until 2019). Moreover, low-chlorinated PCBs were dominant among PCB homologues. Mono-CBs, di-CBs, tri-CBs and tetra-CBs accounted for 86.71 %-98.57 % in sediment segments. The PCB sources included unintentional emission and atmospheric deposition, as well as biological transformation. The total mass concentrations of OCPs ranged from 0.74 to 3.82 ng/g in Core V1 and 0.35 to 2.23 ng/g in Core V2, respectively. Similar trend was observed in the two sediment cores with peaks in the early 1990s. The predominant OCPs were γ-hexachlorohexane (γ-HCHs), dieldrin and p,p'-DDD. The ecological risks posed by PCBs and p-p'-DDD in Lake Fuxian were relatively low. In contrast, dieldrin might pose a potential threat to exposed organisms and apparently adverse ecological effects were caused by γ-HCH. This study introduces an innovative strategy for the rapid and accurate identification of pesticide residues in agricultural products by combining surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) with a state-of-the-art transformer model, termed SERSFormer. Gold-silver core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized and served as high-performance SERS substrates, which possess well-defined structures, uniform dispersion, and a core-shell composition with an average diameter of 21.44 ± 4.02 nm, as characterized by TEM-EDS. SERSFormer employs sophisticated, task-specific data processing techniques and CNN embedders, powered by an architecture features weight-shared multi-head self-attention transformer encoder layers. The SERSFormer model demonstrated exceptional proficiency in qualitative analysis, successfully classifying six categories, including five pesticides (coumaphos, oxamyl, carbophenothion, thiabendazole, and phosmet) and a control group of spinach data, with 98.4% accuracy. For quantitative analysis, the model accurately predicted pesticide concentrations with a mean absolute error of 0.966, a mean squared error of 1.826, and an R 2 score of 0.849. In vivo monitoring of multiple pesticide contamination is of great significance for evaluating the health risks of different pesticides, agricultural production safety, and ecological and environmental assessment. Here, we report a hydrogel microneedle array coupled light-addressable photoelectrochemical sensor for tracking multiple pesticide uptake and elimination in living animals and plants, holding three prominent merits: i) enables in-situ detection of in vivo pesticides, avoiding cumbersome and complex sample transportation and handling processes; ii) allows repeated in vivo sampling of the same organism, improving tracking test controllability and accuracy; iii) avoids lethal sampling, providing a better understanding of the pesticides fate in living organisms. The coupled sensor is mechanically robust for withstanding more than 0.35 N per needle and highly swellable (800 %) for timely extraction of sufficient in vivo solution for analysis. For proof-of-concept, it achieves in-situ detection of atrazine, acetamiprid, and carbendazim efficiently and quantitatively in artificial agarose skin models, mouse skin interstitial fluids, and plant leaves with little inflammatory reaction. Pesticide residue poses a significant global public health concern, necessitating improved detection methods. Here, a novel platform was introduced based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) to detect ten distinct types of pesticides. Notably, the sensitivity of this approach is exemplified by detecting trace amounts of 50 pM (10 ppt) thiabendazole. The correlation between the characteristic peak intensity of coexisting pesticides and their concentrations displays an exceptional linear relationship (R 2  = 0.9999), underscoring its utility for quantitative mixed pesticide detection. Additionally, qualitative analysis of five mixed pesticides was conducted leveraging distinctive peak labeling. Harnessing machine learning techniques, a model for classifying and predicting pesticides on pericarps was developed. Remarkably, the convolutional neural network achieved classification accuracy of 100 % and prediction accuracy of 99.62 %. This innovative approach accurately identifies and quantifies diverse pesticides, thus offering a feasible scheme for in-situ detection of pesticide residues. In this study, 3D-printing based on fused-deposition modeling (FDM) was employed as simple and cost-effective strategy to fabricate a novel format of rotating-disk sorptive devices. As proof-of-concept, twenty organochlorine and organophosphorus pesticides were determined in water samples through rotating-disk sorptive extraction (RDSE) using honeycomb-like 3D-printed disks followed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The devices that exhibited the best performance were comprised of polyamide + 15 % carbon fiber (PA + 15 % C) with the morphology being evaluated through X-ray microtomography. The optimized extraction conditions consisted of 120 min of extraction using 20 mL of sample at stirring speed of 1100 rpm. Additionally, liquid desorption using 800 µL of acetonitrile for 25 min at stirring speed of 1100 rpm provided the best response. Importantly, the methodology also exhibited high throughput since an extraction/desorption platform that permitted up to fifteen simultaneous extractions was employed. The method was validated, providing coefficients of determination higher than 0.9706 for all analytes; limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) ranged from 0.15 to 3.03 μg L -1 and from 0.5 to 10.0 μg L -1 , respectively. Intraday precision ranged from 4.01 to 18.73 %, and interday precision varied from 4.83 to 20.00 %. Accuracy was examined through relative recoveries and ranged from 73.29 to 121.51 %. This method was successfully applied to analyze nine groundwater samples from monitoring wells of gas stations in São Paulo. Xingkai Lake, located in Heilongjiang Province, is an important fishery and agricultural base and is seriously polluted by agricultural non-point sources. To clarify the residual status of many pesticides in the surface water of Xingkai Lake, 27 types of pesticides, herbicides, and their degradation products were analyzed in rice paddy, drainage, and surface water around Xingkai Lake (China) during the rice heading and maturity periods. The results showed that all 27 types of pesticides, herbicides, and their degradation products were detected during the rice heading period, and the total concentration ranged from 247.97 to 6 094.49 ng·L -1 . Additionally, 25 species were detected during the rice maturity period, and the total concentration ranged from 485.36 to 796.23 ng·L -1 . In comparison, more pesticides, herbicides, and derived degradation products were detected during the heading period, and their total concentration was higher as well. During the rice heading period, atrazine, simetryn, and paclobutrazol were the main detected pesticides, atrazine and isoprothiolane were the main pesticides detected during the maturity period. The distribution characteristics of pesticides and herbicides in the surface water around Xingkai Lake (China) was similar to that in drainage, so they were probably imported from the drainage and rice paddy. The average risk quotient (RQ) values of atrazine, simetryn, prometryn, butachlor, isoprothiolane, and oxadiazon were higher than 0.1 in drainage and Xingkai Lake (China), which showed a potential risk to aquatic organisms.

Pesticides play a vital role in ensuring modern agricultural production, but also adversely affecting soil health. Microorganisms are the cornerstone of soil ecology, however, to date, there are few unified standards to measure the risk of soil pesticide residues to soil microbial community. To compensate for this gap, we collected soil samples from 55 orchards and monitored and risk-assessed 165 pesticides to microbial community in the soil. Results showed that a total of 137 pesticides were detected in all samples. Pesticide residues significantly influenced the microbial diversity and community structure in orchard soils, particularly fungicides and herbicides. The risk entropy of each pesticide was calculated in all samples and it was found that 60% of the samples had a "pesticide risk" (Risk quotient > 0.01), where the relative abundance significantly increased in 43 genera and significantly decreased in 111 genera (p < 0.05). Through multiple screens, we finally identified Bacillus and Sphingomonas as the most abundant sensitive genera under pesticide perturbation. The results showed that despite the complexity of the effects of pesticide residues on soils health, we could reveal them by identifying changes in soil bacterial, especially by the differences of microbial biomarkers abundance. The present study could provide new insights into the research strategy for pesticide pollution on soil microbial communities. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: The risk of pesticide residues in soil needs to be quantified and standardized. We believe that microorganisms can be used as a marker to indicate soil pesticide residue risk. For this end, we investigated the residues of 165 pesticides in 55 orchard soil samples, calculated pesticide risk entropy and their effects on the soil microbial community. The present investigation was planned to bridge the knowledge gap on spatiotemporal variations of pesticide pollution in small streams adjacent to paddy fields, and to visualize the associated risks in the aquatic ecosystems. We screened 106 pesticides using GCMSMS and LCMSMS from 10 small streams (n = 212, surface water samples) adjacent to paddy fields over seven months. Fifty-five pesticides were detected across different streams and months. The highest mean concentration was detected for fenobucarb (272 ng L -1 ), followed by thiamethoxam (199 ng L -1 ). The highest maximum concentration was detected for thiamethoxam ( 13,264 ng L -1 ), followed by triflumezopyrim ( 11,505 ng L -1 ). The highest detection frequency was recorded for fenobucarb (80.00%), followed by pretilachlor (79.00%). Out of the ten streams, Attabira stream had the highest mean number of pesticides detected in each sample. Maximum number of pesticides were detected in October followed by September. Pesticides namely, hexaconazole, pretilachlor, tricyclazole, fenobucarb and thiamethoxam were consistently detected across all streams. The risk assessment against the fishes, micro-invertebrates and algae were measured by risk quotient index (RQ). Twenty-five pesticides out of the detected pesticides (n = 55) had risk quotient values greater than 1. The highest RQ max values were observed in case of fenpropathrin followed by cyfluthrin-3. The highest RQ mean value was observed in case of cyfluthrin, indicating its higher toxicity to fishes. Traditional identification methods based on cholinesterase inhibition are limited to recognizing organic phosphorus and carbamate esters, and their response to sulfonylurea pesticides is weak. Residual sulfonylurea pesticides can pose a threat to human health. So, it is very important to develop an effective, rapid and portable method for sulfonylurea pesticides detection. Herein, we first found that sulfonylurea pesticides have activity-enhancing effects on copper-based nanozymes, and then combined them with the array technology to construct a six-channel sensing array method for selectively identifying sulfonylurea pesticides and detecting total concentration of sulfonylurea pesticides (the limit of detection was 0.03 µg/mL). This method has good selectivity towards sulfonylurea pesticides. In addition, a smartphone-based colorimetric paper sensor analysis method was developed to achieve the on-site detection of the total concentration of sulfonylurea pesticides. And this array can also be used for individual differentiation (1-100 µg/mL). Pesticides are used in agriculture to protect crops from pathogens, insects, fungi and weeds, but the release of pesticides into surface/groundwater by agriculture runoff and rain has raised serious concerns not only for the environment but also for human health. This study aimed to investigate the impact of surface properties on the performance of seven distinct membrane types utilized in nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO) and forward osmosis (FO) processes in eliminating multiple pesticides from spiked water. Out of the membranes tested, two are self-fabricated RO membranes while the rest are commercially available membranes. Our results revealed that the self-fabricated RO membranes performed better than other commercial membranes (e.g., SW30XLE, NF270, Duracid and FO) in rejecting the targeted pesticides by achieving at least 99% rejections regardless of the size of pesticides and their log K ow value. Despite the marginally lower water flux exhibited by the self-fabricated membrane compared to the commercial BW30 membrane, its exceptional ability to reject both mono- and divalent salts renders it more apt for treating water sources containing not only pesticides but also various dissolved ions. The enhanced performance of the self-fabricated RO membrane is mainly attributed to the presence of a hydrophilic interlayer (between the polyamide layer and substrate) and the incorporation of hydrophilic nanosheets in tuning its surface characteristics. Background: Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) play important roles in the natural environment, agricultural fields, and biological prevention. The development of OPs detection has gradually become an effective strategy to avoid the dangers of pesticides abuse and solve the severe environmental and health problems in humans. Although conventional assays for OPs analysis such as the bulky instrument required analytical methods have been well-developed, it still remains the limitation of inconvenient, inefficient and lab-dependence analysis in real samples. Hence, there is an urgent demand to develop efficient detection methods for OPs analysis in real scenarios., Results: Here, by virtue of the highly efficient catalytic performance in Fe 7 S 8 nanoflakes (Fe 7 S 8 NFs), we propose an OPs detection method that rationally integrated Fe 7 S 8 NFs into the acetylcholine (ACh) triggered enzymatic cascade reaction (ATECR) for proceeding better detection performances. In this method, OPs serve as the enzyme inhibitors for inhibiting ATECR among ACh, acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and choline oxidase (CHO), then reduce the generation of H 2 O 2 to suppress the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) that catalyzed by Fe 7 S 8 NFs. Benefiting from the integration of Fe 7 S 8 NFs and ATECR, it enables a sensitive detection for OPs (e.g. dimethoate). The proposed method has presented good linear ranges of OPs detection ranging from 0.1 to 10 μg mL -1 . Compared to the other methods, the comparable limits of detection (LOD) of OPs are as low as 0.05 μg mL -1 ., Significance: Furthermore, the proposed method has also achieved a favorable visual detection performance of revealing OPs analysis in real samples. Bisphenols and pesticides have been shown to alter circulating glucocorticoids levels in animals, but there is limited human data. Moreover, measurements from biological fluids may not be able to reflect long-term status of non-persistent pollutants and glucocorticoids due to the high variability in their levels. Using hair analysis, we examined the associations between glucocorticoid hormones and environmental exposure to multi-class organic pollutants among a healthy female population aged 25-45 years old. Concentrations of four glucocorticoids, four polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCBs), seven polybrominated diphenyl ether congeners (PBDEs), two bisphenols and 140 pesticides and their metabolites were measured in hair samples collected from 196 Chinese women living in urban areas. Due to the low detection frequency of some pollutants, associations were explored only on 54 pollutants, i.e. PCB 180, bisphenol A, bisphenol S and 51 pesticides and their metabolites. Using stability-based Lasso regression, there were associations of cortisol, tetrahydrocortisol, cortisone, and tetrahydrocortisone with 14, 10, 13 and 17 biomarkers of exposure to pollutants, respectively, with bisphenol S, p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene, diethyl phosphate, 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol, thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, fipronil, tebuconazole, trifluralin, pyraclostrobin and 1-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-3-methylurea being associated with at least three of the four hormones. There were also associations between cortisone/cortisol molar ratio and pollutants, namely dimethyl phosphate, 3-methyl-4-nitrophenol, carbofuran, λ-cyhalothrin, permethrin, fipronil, flusilazole, prometryn and fenuron. Some of these relationships were confirmed by single-pollutant linear regression analyses. Pesticides, especially the newly developed neonicotinoids, are increasingly used in many countries around the world, including Cameroon, to control pests involved in crop destruction or disease transmission. Unfortunately, the pesticides also pose tremendous environmental problems because a predominant amount of their residues enter environmental matrices to affect other nontargeted species including humans. This therefore calls for continuous biomonitoring of these insecticides in human populations. The present study sought to assess the neonicotinoid insecticide exposures in two agrarian regions of Cameroon, the South-West region and Littoral region. The study involved 188 men, including 125 farmers and 63 nonfarmers. Spot urine samples were obtained from these subjects and subjected to liquid chromatographic-tandem mass spectrometric analysis for concentrations of neonicotinoid compounds, including acetamiprid, clothianidin, dinotefuran, imidacloprid, thiacloprid, nitenpyram, thiamethoxam, and N-dm-acetamiprid. Neonicotinoid compounds were detected in all study participants, and residues of all the screened pesticides were detected among participants. N-dm-Acetamiprid and imidacloprid were the most prevalent among the subjects (100.0% and 93.1%, respectively), whereas nitenpyram was less common (3.2%). The median values of imidacloprid and total urinary neonicotinoid concentrations were elevated among farmers (0.258 vs. 0.126 µg/L and 0.829 vs. 0.312 µg/L, respectively). Altogether the findings showed that both the farmer and nonfarmer study populations of Cameroon were exposed to multiple residues of neonicotinoids, with relatively higher levels of pesticides generally recorded among farmers. Although exposure levels of the neonicotinoids were generally lower than their respective reference doses, these results warrant further research on the health risk evaluation of multiple residues of the pesticides and reinforcement of control measures to minimize the exposure risks, especially among farmers. Freshwater ecosystems face a particularly high risk of biodiversity loss compared to marine and terrestrial systems. The use of pesticides in agricultural fields is recognized as a relevant stressor for freshwater environments, exerting a negative impact worldwide on the overall status and health of the freshwater communities. In the present work, part of the Horizon 2020 funded SPRINT project, the occurrence of 193 pesticide residues was investigated in 64 small water bodies of distinct typology (creeks, streams, channels, ditches, rivers, lakes, ponds and reservoirs), located in regions with high agricultural activity in 10 European countries and in Argentina. Mixtures of pesticide residues were detected in all water bodies (20, median; 8-40 min-max). Total pesticide levels found ranged between 6.89 and 5860 ng/L, highlighting herbicides as the dominant type of pesticides. Glyphosate was the compound with the highest median concentration followed by 2,4-D and MCPA, and in a lower degree by dimethomorph, fluopicolide, prothioconazole and metolachlor(-S). Argentina was the site with the highest total pesticide concentration in water bodies followed by The Netherlands, Portugal and France. One or more pesticides exceeded the threshold values established in the European Water Framework Directive for surface water in 9 out of 11 case study sites (CSS), and the total pesticide concentration surpassed the reference value of 500 ng/L in 8 CSS. Pesticides, which are vital for agriculture, pose a significant threat to wildlife in transformed Japanese landscapes. Despite global reports of pesticide poisoning in animals, limited studies have examined current wildlife exposure in croplands or metropolitan areas in the region. Using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), our study aimed to assess the contamination status of 368 commonly used pesticides. The stomach contents of raccoons living in croplands contained 13 pesticides, including six herbicides and 11 fungicides. Neonicotinoid insecticides, some fungicides, and previously banned insecticides (benzene hexachloride and dichlofenthion) were most frequently detected and found at the highest concentrations, suggesting direct soil-plant transfer and direct consumption by crop-eating species. In masked palm civets living in metropolitan areas, four insecticides and six fungicides were detected, indicating urban wildlife exposure from raided dustbins, urban gardens, and lumber from houses. Although the maximum measured concentrations of all pesticides were lower than the acceptable daily intake for humans, it remains unclear whether these concentrations may have toxic or adverse health effects on the species evaluated in these transformed landscapes. Our study is the first to examine recent pesticide exposures in wild mammals in Japan. Application of the method we developed will lay the foundation for the examination of pesticides in other wildlife species to assist conservation management efforts in the region. Pesticides from agricultural practices are among the most pressing reasons why groundwater sources do not reach the good chemical status standards as required by the European Water Framework directive. Complementary to previous federal pesticide reports, we analysed groundwater-monitoring data from 13 German Länder assembled in a database consisting of 26.192 groundwater measuring sites sampled between 1973 and 2021 of in total 521 parent compounds and metabolites. This study focuses on agricultural plant protection products. The monitored substance spectrum and site density developed over time and differs between Länder. More than 95 % of all samples lie below the respective (multiple) limits of quantification (LOQ). We thus report the frequency of exceedance above concentration thresholds, which allows to compare measurements temporally and spatially. Pesticide detections were found in all aquifer types, land uses and well screen depths. Most detections of higher concentrations were found in agricultural areas, at shallow screen depth in porous aquifers. Karst aquifers showed also a higher percentage of samples in higher concentration classes. Metabolites with high mobility and persistence were found in higher concentration ranges. Herbicides and metabolites thereof dominate the top 20 of pesticides that most frequently exceed 0.1 μg L -1 . The ranking for 2010-2019 includes both authorised and banned compounds and their occurrence is discussed in the context of their mobility, persistence and underlying monitoring density. Yearly exceedance frequencies above 0.05, 0.1 μg L -1 and higher thresholds of metazachlor and its esa-metabolite, and national sales data of the parent compound did not show a temporal correlation in subsequent years. This study stresses the need for the harmonisation of heterogeneous pesticide data. Pesticides used in agriculture have low polarity and a tendency to accumulate in fatty tissues, posing potential risks to human health. Effective pre-treatment is crucial due to complex sample matrices and low concentrations of pesticide residues typically encountered in instrument analysis. In this study, polyaniline-coated kapok fiber (PANI-KF) was synthesized successfully using in-situ oxidative polymerization for use as sorbents in in-syringe SPME of pyrethroid pesticides (PYRs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) from aqueous samples. Coating the natural KF with PANI maintained the hollow microtubular structure and fiber morphology while significantly enhancing the extraction efficiency. The extraction process was easily conducted by simply pulling and pushing the syringe plunger. The entire extraction process, utilizing 3 mg of PANI-KF, could be completed in approximately 3 min. Density functional theory results indicated that the adsorption mechanism of PANI-KF towards OCPs and PYRs mainly involved van der Waals interactions, π-π interactions, and weak hydrogen bonding interactions. With the coupling of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, a quantification method was established that exhibited good linearities (R 2  > 0.990), and relative recoveries (87.2-108.5 %). The limits of detection ranged from 0.4 to 2.0 ng mL -1 and the matrix effects were negligible (-12.3-16.4 %). The validated in-syringe SPME-GC-MS method was successfully applied to determine pesticide residues in fruit juices, oral liquids and herbal extract granules with satisfactory accuracy and precision. Triazole pesticides are widely used in modern agricultural practices to improve agricultural production quality. Simultaneously, unreasonable and standardized use of triazole pesticides could induce a series of potential diseases of humans. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy has attracted enormous research attention because of its label-free and fingerprint detection capability to noninvasively trace extremely low concentration analytes. To the best of our knowledge, there is a lack of systematic comparison regarding the Raman spectral information of triazole pesticides in existing literatures. In this work, we successfully captured the characteristic peaks of six different triazole pesticides individually and simultaneously using Au decahedral nanoparticles. The proposed method exhibited remarkable detection sensitivity, a wide dynamic range, and the capability for in-situ detection of multiple pesticide residues on bean, apple, and vegetable surfaces with satisfactory recovery rates. Monitoring organophosphorus pesticides is significant for food safety assessment. Herein, we developed upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs)-based self-ratiometric fluorescent platform for the detection of chlorpyrifos. The UCNPs have the ability to confine the detection and reference functions in one nanoparticle. Specifically, the blue upconversion (UC) emission (448 nm) in the shell layer of UCNPs is quenched by the product of the acetylcholinesterase-mediated reaction, while the red UC emission (652 nm) from the core remains constant as a self-calibrated reference signal. Employing the inhibition property of chlorpyrifos, self-proportional fluorescence is employed to detect chlorpyrifos. As proof-of-concept, test strips are fabricated by loading the UCNPs onto filter paper. Combined with the smartphone and image-processing algorithm, chlorpyrifos quantitative testing is achieved with a detection limit of 14.4843 ng mL -1 . Analysis of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) residues in milk faces a significant challenge. Herein, a sea urchin structured covalent organic framework bearing boric acid groups named COF-B(OH) 2 was synthesized and applied as a coating material for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of the OCPs in cattle's milk. Its performance was superior to that of three commonly used commercial SPME fibers, which could be due to the coexistence of hydrogen bonding, halogen bonding, π-stacking and electrostatic interactions. Besides, the fiber coating displayed good stability and reusability. After optimization, a COF-B(OH) 2 based SPME coupled with gas chromatography-electron capture detection was established for the sensitive detection of the OCPs from milk samples. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) were between 0.04 and 1.00 μg kg -1 . Satisfactory accuracy was achieved with the method recoveries in the range of 87.5 % to 112.5 %. Developing adsorbents with high performance and long service life for effective extracting the trace organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) from real water is attracting numerous attentions. Herein, a self-standing covalent organic framework (COF-TpPa) membrane with fiber morphology was successfully synthesized by using electrospun nanofiber membranes as template and employed as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating for ultra-high sensitivity extraction and analysis of trace OCPs in water. The as-synthesized COF-TpPa membrane exhibited a high specific surface area (800.83 m 2 g -1 ), stable nanofibrous structure, and excellent chemical and thermal stability. Based on the COF-TpPa membrane, a new SPME analytical method in conjunction with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was established. This proposed method possessed favorable linearity in concentration of 0.05-2000 ng L -1 , high sensitivity with enrichment factors ranging from 2175 to 5846, low limits of detection (0.001-0.150 ng L -1 ), satisfactory precision (RSD < 10 %), and excellent repeatability (>150 cycles), which was better than most of the reported works. Additionally, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and XPS results demonstrated that the outstanding enrichment performance of the COF-TpPa membrane was owing to synergistic effect of π-π stacking effects, high specific surface area and hydrogen bonding. The present review addresses the significance of lowering pesticide residue levels in food items because of their harmful impacts on human health, wildlife populations, and the environment. It draws attention to the possible health risks-acute and chronic poisoning, cancer, unfavorable effects on reproduction, and harm to the brain or immunological systems-that come with pesticide exposure. Numerous traditional and cutting-edge methods, such as washing, blanching, peeling, thermal treatments, alkaline electrolyzed water washing, cold plasma, ultrasonic cleaning, ozone treatment, and enzymatic treatment, have been proposed to reduce pesticide residues in food products. It highlights the necessity of a paradigm change in crop protection and agri-food production on a global scale. It offers opportunities to guarantee food safety through the mitigation of pesticide residues in food. The review concludes that the first step in reducing worries about the negative effects of pesticides is to implement regulatory measures to regulate their use. In order to lower the exposure to dietary pesticides, the present review also emphasizes the significance of precision agricultural practices and integrated pest management techniques. The advanced approaches covered in this review present viable options along with traditional methods and possess the potential to lower pesticide residues in food items without sacrificing quality. Agricultural pesticides, nutrients, and habitat degradation are major causes of insect declines in lowland streams. To effectively conserve and restore stream habitats, standardized stream monitoring data and societal support for freshwater protection are needed. Here, we sampled 137 small stream monitoring sites across Germany, 83 % of which were located in agricultural catchments, with >900 citizen scientists in 96 monitoring groups. Sampling was carried out according to Water Framework Directive standards as part of the citizen science freshwater monitoring program FLOW in spring and summer 2021, 2022 and 2023. The biological indicator SPEAR pesticides was used to assess pesticide exposure and effects based on macroinvertebrate community composition. Overall, 58 % of the agricultural monitoring sites failed to achieve a good ecological status in terms of macroinvertebrate community composition and indicated high pesticide exposure (SPEAR pesticides status class: 29 % "moderate", 19 % "poor", 11 % "bad"). The indicated pesticide pressure in streams was related to the proportion of arable land in the catchment areas (R 2  = 0.23, p < 0.001). Also with regards to hydromorphology, monitoring results revealed that 65 % of the agricultural monitoring sites failed to reach a good status. The database produced by citizen science groups was characterized by a high degree of accuracy, as results obtained by citizen scientists and professionals were highly correlated for SPEAR pesticides index (R 2  = 0.79, p < 0.001) and hydromorphology index values (R 2  = 0.72, p < 0.001). The urgent need for sensitive and accurate assays to monitor acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) arises from the imperative to safeguard human health and protect the ecosystem. Due to its cost-effectiveness, ease of operation, and rapid response, nanozyme-based colorimetry has been widely utilized in the determination of AChE activity and OPs. However, the rational design of nanozymes with high activity and specificity remains a great challenge. Herein, trace amount of Bi-doped core-shell Pd@Pt mesoporous nanospheres (Pd@PtBi 2 ) have been successfully synthesized, exhibiting good peroxidase-like activity and specificity. With the incorporation of trace bismuth, there is a more than 4-fold enhancement in the peroxidase-like performance of Pd@PtBi 2 compared to that of Pd@Pt. Besides, no significant improvement of oxidase-like and catalase-like activities of Pd@PtBi 2 was found, which prevents interference from O 2 and undesirable consumption of substrate H 2 O 2 . Based on the blocking impact of thiocholine, a colorimetric detection platform utilizing Pd@PtBi 2 was constructed to monitor AChE activity with sensitivity and selectivity. Given the inhibition of OPs on AChE activity, a biosensor was further developed by integrating Pd@PtBi 2 with AChE to detect OPs, capitalizing on the cascade amplification strategy. The OP biosensor achieved a detection limit as low as 0.06 ng mL -1 , exhibiting high sensitivity and anti-interference ability. This work is promising for the construction of nanozymes with high activity and specificity, as well as the development of nanozyme-based colorimetric biosensors.

During the growing season of 2021, 201 soil samples from conventionally and organically managed fields from 10 European countries and 8 cropping systems were taken, and 192 residues of synthetic pesticides were analyzed. Pesticide residues were found in 97% of the samples, and 88% of the samples contained mixtures of at least 2 substances. A maximum of 21 substances were found in conventionally managed fields, and a maximum of 12 were found in organically managed fields. The number and concentration of pesticide residues varied significantly between conventional and organic fields in 70 and 50% of the case study sites, respectively. Application records were available for a selected number of fields ( n = 82), and these records were compared to the detected substances. Residues from 52% of the applied pesticides were detected in the soils. Only 21% of the pesticide residues detected in the soil samples were applied during the 2021 growing season. From the application data, predicted environmental concentrations of residues in soil were calculated and compared to the measured concentrations. These estimates turned out not to be accurate. The results of this study show that most European agricultural soils contain mixtures of pesticide residues and that current calculation methods may not reliably estimate their presence.

This work presents a novel, convenient and effective method for assaying organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) in the pulp and peel of citrus fruits. In this method, shaped UiO-66/alginate (UiO-66/Alg) beads were employed to replace the powder sorbents used in traditional dispersive solid phase extraction (d-SPE) methods. The UiO-66/Alg beads can be easily separated by only using a tweezer within 1 min, which effectively simplifies the sample pretreatment and overcomes the shortages brought by the incomplete separation of powder sorbents. Moreover, the matrix compounds can be effectively excluded by UiO-66/Alg beads, and the UiO-66/Alg beads can be reused at least 8 times. The d-SPE conditions were optimized by a single factor test. The method shows satisfactory sensitivity, accuracy and precision. Furthermore, ATR-FTIR and UV-Vis-DRS were employed to investigate the adsorption mechanism. Despite the potential of nanozymes combined with sensor arrays for discriminating multiple pesticides simultaneously, they have few practical pesticide sensing uses due to the limited performance of existing nanozymes and the complexity of their preparation. Here, agricultural waste is utilized for the facile synthesis of high-performance biochar nanozymes and the fabrication of biochar nanozyme sensor arrays. The production of autogenous N-doped biochars with abundant surface functional groups and good peroxidase-like activities is achieved with different types of algae. High-performance biochar nanozyme sensor arrays can discriminate pesticides in a concentration range from 1 to 500 μM and in real samples from soil, lake water, seawater, apples, cucumbers, peaches, tomatoes and cabbages. Furthermore, pesticides can be quantified down to 1 μM. Pesticides are widely used in the cultivation and breeding of agricultural products all over the world. However, their direct use or indirect pollution in animal breeding may lead to residual accumulation, migration, and metabolism in animal-derived foods, posing potential health risks to humans through the food chain. Therefore, it is necessary to detect pesticide residues in animal-derived food using simple, reliable, and sensitive methods. This review summarizes sample extraction and clean-up methods, as well as the instrumental determination technologies such as chromatography and chromatography-mass spectrometry for residual analysis in animal-derived foods, including meat, eggs and milk. Additionally, we perspectives on the future of this field. The uptake and elimination kinetics of pesticides from soil to earthworms are important in characterising the risk of pesticides to soil organisms and the risk from secondary poisoning. However, the understanding of the relative importance of chemical, soil, and species differences in determining pesticide bioconcentration into earthworms is limited. Furthermore, there is insufficient independent data in the literature to fully evaluate existing predictive bioconcentration models. We conducted kinetic uptake and elimination experiments for three contrasting earthworm species (Lumbricus terrestris, Aporrectodea caliginosa, Eisenia fetida) in five soils using a mixture of five pesticides (log K ow 1.69 - 6.63). Bioconcentration increased with pesticide hydrophobicity and decreased with soil organic matter. Bioconcentration factors were comparable between earthworm species for hydrophilic pesticides due to the similar water content of earthworm species. Inter-species variations in bioconcentration of hydrophobic pesticides were primarily accounted for by earthworm lipid content and specific surface area (SSA). Existing bioconcentration models either failed to perform well across earthworm species and for more hydrophilic compounds (log K ow < 2) or were not parameterised for a wide range of compounds and earthworm species. Rapid degradation of carbofuran (CBF) pesticide is effectively achieved by submerged thermal plasma (STP) without and with the addition of persulfate (PS) at two different concentrations (10 and 20 ppm). Degradation efficiency was examined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and mineralization percentage was determined by total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. Adding 10 ppm PS showed higher degradation and mineralization percentages of 99.5% and 65.2%, respectively, than mere plasma treatment and 20 ppm PS addition to CBF solution. A relatively higher energy yield of 40 mg/kWh and a first order kinetic reaction rate of 0.262 min -1 were obtained in the 10 PS added STP treatment. Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LCMS) analysis illustrated reaction intermediates formed during plasma treatment. Scavenger investigation implied that • OH radical is the prime cause of CBF degradation, as degradation percentage declined to 50% in all conditions. Toxicity assessment of CBF and its degradation products was predicted using Toxicity estimation software tool (TEST), and plasma treated solutions (PTS) were experimentally investigated on Eudrilus eugeniae earthworms by monitoring its mortality rate, self-assemblage, and histopathological analysis. A lower mortality rate (46%) and self-assemblage (167 s) of earthworms were detected for plasma treated CBF than for the other conditions. The results reveal that PTS is less toxic for earthworms than untreated CBF solution. The US pesticide registration and review process requires regular re-assessment of the risk of pesticide use to species listed under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), yet current assessment methods are inefficient when applied to hundreds of pesticides potentially impacting multiple species across a continent. Thus, many pesticides remain on the market without complete review. We assessed the value of using high resolution pesticide usage data in the risk assessment process to rapidly improve process efficiency. By using data available only in California, we found that high resolution data increased the number of species deemed not likely to be adversely affected by pesticides from <5 % to nearly 50 %. Across the contiguous US, we predicted that 48 % of species would be deemed not likely to be adversely affected using high resolution data, compared to 20 % without. However, if such data were available in just 11 states, 68 % of the available gains in efficiency could be obtained. The study investigated the dissipation ability of a vegetated free water surface (FWS) constructed wetland (CW) in treating pesticides-contaminated agricultural runoff/drainage water in a rural area belonging to Bologna province (Italy). The experiment simulated a 0.1% pesticide agricultural water runoff/drainage event from a 12.5-ha farm by dissolving acetamiprid, metalaxyl, S-metolachlor, and terbuthylazine in 1000 L of water and pumping it into the CW. Water and sediment samples from the CW were collected for 4 months at different time intervals to determine pesticide concentrations by multiresidue extraction and chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses. In parallel, no active compounds were detected in the CW sediments during the experimental period. Pesticides dissipation in the wetland water compartment was modeled according to best data practices by fitting the data to Single First Order (SFO), First Order Multi-Compartment (FOMC) and Double First Order in Parallel (DFOP) kinetic models. SFO (except for metalaxyl), FOMC and DFOP kinetic models adequately predicted the dissipation for the four investigated molecules, with the DFOP kinetic model that better fitted the observed data. The modeled distribution of each pesticide between biomass and water in the CW highly correlated with environmental indexes as K ow and bioconcentration factor. Computed DT50 by DFOP model were 2.169, 8.019, 1.551 and 2.047 days for acetamiprid, metalaxyl, S-metolachlor, and terbuthylazine, respectively. Although the exact degradation mechanisms of each pesticide require further study, the FWS CW was found to be effective in treating pesticides-contaminated agricultural runoff/drainage water within an acceptable time. Global food production relies on annual grain crops. The reliability and productivity of these crops are threatened by adaptations to climate change and unsustainable rates of soil loss associated with their cultivation. Perennial grain crops, which do not require planting every year, have been proposed as a transformative solution to these challenges. Perennial grain crops typically rely on wild species as direct domesticates or as sources of perenniality in hybridization with annual grains. Onobrychis spp. (sainfoins) are a genus of perennial legumes domesticated as ancient forages. Baki™ bean is the tradename for pulses derived from sainfoins, with ongoing domestication underway to extend demonstrated benefits to sustainable agriculture. This study contributes to a growing body of evidence characterizing the nutritional quality of Baki™ bean. Through two studies, we investigated the safety of Baki™ bean for human consumption. We quantified heavy metals, folate, and canavanine for samples from commercial seed producers, and we quantified levels of mycotoxins, microorganisms, and pesticides in samples from a single year and seed producer, representing different varieties and production locations. The investigated analytes were not detectable or occurred at levels that do not pose a significant safety risk. Overall, this study supports the safety of Baki™ bean for human consumption as a novel pulse crop.

A method based on novel restricted access materials (RAMs) for the determination of neonicotinoid pesticides in Goji samples using offline and online solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (LC). RAMs were synthesized using poly(chloromethylstyrene-co-divinylbenzene) (P VBC/DVB ) microspheres as substrate, styrene (St) and n-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) were first copolymerized on the interior to construct adsorption sites, and sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) was then polymerized on the exterior to form exclusion sites via two-step surface initiated-atom transfer polymerization. The prepared P VBC/DVB @poly(St-co-NVP)@poly(SBMA) RAMs could efficiently extract neonicotinoid pesticides and automatically exclude proteins. Under the optimized conditions, the developed methods of offline (magnetic SPE and SPE column) and online extraction coupled with LC both using P VBC/DVB @poly(St-co-NVP)@poly(SBMA) RAMs as the extractant, exhibit a wide linearity, low limits of detection and limit of quantification and good inter-day and intra-day precision with satisfactory recoveries. Pesticide active ingredients (PAIs) are one of the main contributors affecting water quality in the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Area (GBRCA). While an extensive list of pesticides is monitored in the GBRCA, only a limited number have water quality guideline values (WQGs), meaning it is not possible to know whether these PAIs are present at concentrations that may pose a hazard to the aquatic environment. In the current study, we derived 66 ecotoxicity threshold values (ETVs) for PAIs, the equivalent of WQGs, with a focus on PAIs applied to sugar cane. The hazard posed by PAIs monitored as part of the Great Barrier Reef Catchment Loads Monitoring Program (GBRCLMP) was assessed by comparing the derived ETVs with monitoring data from 2016/2017 to 2021/2022. The derived ETVs included herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, with the values that should protect 99 or 95 % of aquatic species (PC99 or PC95) spanning nine orders of magnitude. The concentrations of 10 PAIs exceeded their respective ETVs, giving a hazard quotient (HQ) >1. Of particular concern were insecticides chlorpyrifos, diazinon and methomyl, which have maximum HQ values >10. However, joint probability plots indicated that the PAIs generally pose a low risk to the aquatic environment, with most samples below the limit of reporting. As PAIs are predominantly found in mixtures in the GBRCA, the hazard posed by PAI mixtures was assessed by summing all individual HQ values in a sample for all PAIs with an ETV or WQG. On average, the insecticide active ingredient imidacloprid and herbicide active ingredients metolachlor, metsulfuron methyl, diuron and imazepic were the drivers of combined mixture hazard. This study aimed to estimate the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk as well as the attributable cases due to exposure to organochlorine pesticides (OCPs): hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorophenyltrichloroethane (DDT), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), heptachlor, and chlordane. From serum concentrations of pesticides of interest in a sample of 908 women from Northern Mexico, the risk for both cancer and non-cancer health effects was evaluated. The population attributable fraction (PAF) was also calculated based on summary association estimates between exposure to OCPs and different health events. Findings revealed that due to their OCP exposure slightly less than half of the women in the sample were at increased risk of developing non-cancerous diseases. Moreover, approximately 25% and 75% of participants were at risk of develop some type of cancer associated with their HCB and DDE concentrations, respectively. In addition, it was estimated that 40.5% of type 2 diabetes, 18.7% of endometriosis, and 23.1% of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cases could have been prevented if women had not been exposed to these OCPs. Results suggest that the use of OCPs may have contributed to the disease burden in the study area and, based on the time required for these substances to be eliminated from the body, there are probably some women who are still at elevated risk of developing diseases associated to OCPs., (© 2024. The objectives of this study were to: (1) characterize the exposure of aquatic ecosystems in Southern Ontario, Canada to pesticides between 2002 and 2016 by constructing environmental exposure distributions (EEDs), including censored data; and (2) predict the probability of exceeding acute regulatory guidelines. Surface water samples were collected over a 15-year period by Environment and Climate Change Canada. The dataset contained 167 compounds, sampled across 114 sites, with a total of 2,213 samples. There were 67,920 total observations of which 55,058 were non-detects (81%), and 12,862 detects (19%). The most commonly detected compound was atrazine, with a maximum concentration of 18,600 ngL - 1 and ~ 4% chance of exceeding an acute guideline (1,000 ngL - 1 ) in rivers and streams. To protect human health, wildlife and the aquatic environment, "safe uses" of pesticides are determined at the EU level while product authorization and terms of use are established at the national level. In Sweden, extra precaution is taken to protect drinking water, and permits are therefore required for pesticide use within abstraction zones. This paper presents MACRO-DB, a tool for assessing pesticide contamination risks of groundwater and surface water, used by authorities to support their decision-making for issuing such permits. MACRO-DB is a meta-model based on 583,200 simulations of the physically-based MACRO model used for assessing pesticide leaching risks at EU and national level. MACRO-DB is simple to use and runs on widely available input data. Pesticide residues may be present in olive oil because pesticides are applied to olive trees during their cultivation and growth for pest prevention and some of these pesticides are not easily degraded. Studies on pesticide residues in olive oil have mainly focused on the detection of single types of pesticide residues, and reports on the simultaneous detection of multiple pesticide residues are limited. At present, hundreds of pesticides with different polarities and chemical properties are used in practice. In this study, an analytical method based on fully automatic QuEChERS pretreatment instrument coupled with gas chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-QTOF-MS) was established for the rapid determination of 222 pesticide residues in olive oil. The effects of acetonitrile acidification concentration, n -hexane volume, oscillation time, centrifugation temperature, and purification agent on the determination of the 222 pesticide residues were investigated. First, ions with good responses and no obvious interference were selected for quantification and characterization. The purification process was then developed by setting the parameters of the fully automatic QuEChERS pretreatment instrument to optimal values. The sample was extracted with acetonitrile containing 2% formic acid, and the supernatant was purified by centrifugation in a centrifuge tube containing 400 mg N -propylethylenediamine (PSA), 400 mg octadecylsilane-bonded silica gel (C18), and 1200 mg anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The purified solution was blown dry with nitrogen and then fixed with ethyl acetate for instrumental analysis. Finally, a matrix standard solution was used for quantification. The method was validated in terms of matrix effects, linear ranges, limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs), accuracies, and precisions. The results showed that 86.04% of the 222 pesticides had linear ranges of 0.02-2.00 μg/mL, 10.81% had linear ranges of 0.10-2.00 μg/mL, and 3.15% had linear ranges of 0.20-2.00 μg/mL. The pesticide residues showed good relationships within their respective linear ranges, and the correlation coefficients ( R 2 ) were greater than 0.99. The LODs of all tested pesticides ranged from 0.002 to 0.050 mg/kg, and their LOQs ranged from 0.007 to 0.167 mg/kg. Among the 222 pesticides determined, 170 pesticides had LOQs of 0.007 mg/kg while 21 pesticides had LOQs of 0.017 mg/kg. At the three spiked levels of 0.2, 0.5, and 0.8 mg/kg, 79.58% of all tested pesticides had average recoveries of 70%-120% while 65.92% had average recoveries of 80%-110%. In addition, 93.54% of all tested pesticides had relative standard deviations (RSDs, n =6)<10% while 98.35% had RSDs ( n =6)<20%. The method was applied to 14 commercially available olive oil samples, and seven pesticides were detected in the range of 0.0044-0.0490 mg/kg. The residues of fenbuconazole, chlorpyrifos, and methoprene did not exceed the maximum limits stated in GB 2763-2021. The maximum residual limits of molinate, monolinuron, benalaxyl, and thiobencarb have not been established. The method utilizes the high mass resolution capability of TOF-MS, which can improve the detection throughput while ensuring good sensitivity. In addition, high-resolution and accurate mass measurements render the screening results more reliable, which is necessary for the high-throughput detection of pesticide residues. The use of a fully automatic QuEChERS instrument in the pretreatment step reduces personnel errors and labor costs, especially when a large number of samples must be processed, thereby offering significant advantages over other approaches. Moreover, the method is simple, rapid, sensitive, highly automatable, accurate, and precise. Thus, it meets requirements for the high-throughput detection of pesticide residues in olive oil and provides a reference for the development of detection methods for pesticide residues in other types of oils as well as the automatic pretreatment of complex matrices.

Stable isotopes (SI) and fatty acid (FA) biomarkers can provide insights regarding trophic pathways and habitats associated with contaminant bioaccumulation. We assessed relationships between SI and FA biomarkers and published data on concentrations of two pesticides [dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and degradation products (DDX) and bifenthrin] in juvenile Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) from the Sacramento River and Yolo Bypass floodplain in Northern California near Sacramento. We also conducted SI and FA analyses of zooplankton and macroinvertebrates to determine whether particular trophic pathways and habitats were associated with elevated pesticide concentrations in fish. Relationships between DDX and both sulfur (δ 34 S) and carbon (δ 13 C) SI ratios in salmon indicated that diet is a major exposure route for DDX, particularly for individuals with a benthic detrital energy base. Greater use of a benthic detrital energy base likely accounted for the higher frequency of salmon with DDX concentrations > 60 ng/g dw in the Yolo Bypass compared to the Sacramento River. Chironomid larvae and zooplankton were implicated as prey items likely responsible for trophic transfer of DDX to salmon. Sulfur SI ratios enabled identification of hatchery-origin fish that had likely spent insufficient time in the wild to substantially bioaccumulate DDX. Bifenthrin concentration was unrelated to SI or FA biomarkers in salmon, potentially due to aqueous uptake, biotransformation and elimination of the pesticide, or indistinct biomarker compositions among invertebrates with low and high bifenthrin concentrations. One FA [docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)] and DDX were negatively correlated in salmon, potentially due to a greater uptake of DDX from invertebrates with low DHA or effects of DDX on FA metabolism. Currently, pesticide production and use are on the rise globally. This trend is certain to continue in the coming decades with residues posing risks to the environment and human health even at low levels. Although various aspects of pesticides and their possible implications have widely been studied, such studies have mostly been carried out in developed countries leaving the rest of the world with little scientific information. We present here the results of a study on the occurrences, concentrations, and ecological risks of 30 pesticide residues (PRs) in water and sediment samples from a tropical freshwater Lake Hawassa in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. A total of 54 composite samples of water and sediment were collected from three sampling sites on three occasions. The samples were prepared by quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) technique, and analyzed using GC-MS at Bless Agri Food Laboratory Service located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The study applied the risk quotient (RQ) method to scrutinize the risks posed to aquatic biota by the detected PRs. The results showed occurrences of 18 and 20 PRs in the water and sediment samples, respectively. The majority, 78 and 75% of the detected PRs in water and sediment samples, respectively represent the organochlorine chemical class. Concentrations of heptachlor epoxide were significantly (p ≤ 0.001) higher than those of the remaining pesticides in both matrices. Of the pesticides detected, 77% were present in water and 83% in sediment samples and pose a serious risk (RQ ≥ 1) to the Lake Hawassa biota. This calls for further research to investigate the risks to human health posed by the PRs. This study established a residue detection method based on the QuEChERS pre-treatment method and combined it with high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to test six herbicides (metamitron, clopyralid, desmedipham, phenmedipham, ethofumesate, and haloxyfop-p-methyl) in sugar beet plants, soil, and roots. The degradation dynamics and terminal residues of each herbicide in sugar beets were analysed. Finally, the dietary risks of various herbicides in sugar beets were evaluated based on the dietary structure of Chinese people, and the risk quotient values were below 100%. Using this detection method, all reagents exhibited good linearity (0.9724 ≤ R 2 ≤ 0.9998), The limit of quantification (LOQ) ranged from 0.01 to 0.05 mg/L, the matrix effect ranged from -1.2% to -50%, the addition recovery rate ranged from 77.00% to 103.48%, and the relative standard deviation ranged from 1.61% to 16.17%; therefore, all indicators of this method met the residue detection standards. Under field conditions, the half-lives (t 1/2 ) ranged about 0.65 ∼ 2.96 d and 0.38 ∼ 27.59 d in sugar beet plants and soil, respectively. All herbicides were easily degraded in sugar beet plants and soil (t 1/2 < 30 d). The terminal residue amounts in the beet plants, soil, and roots ranged from < LOQ to 0.243 mg/kg. The dietary risk assessment of each pesticide was conducted based on the residual median of the terminal residues and the highest residual values on the edible part of the beetroot. Pesticide residue was one of the stress factors affecting quality and safety of Chinese herbal medicines (CHMs). The present study was designed to investigate the occurrence and dietary exposure of 70 pesticide residues in 307 samples of CHMs, including 104 American ginseng, 100 Ganoderma lucidum (G. lucidum), and 103 Dendrobium officinale (D. officinale) in Shandong Province, China. The study revealed that a total of 29 pesticides were detected in the majority (92.5%) of samples, and the pesticide residues of 85 (27.7%) samples exceeded the maximum residue levels (MRLs). Particularly, the maximum concentration of chlorpyrifos was 23.8 mg kg -1 , almost 50 times of the MRLs in food in GB 2763-2021, while there's no standard restrictions specified in CHMs in China. The chronic, acute, and cumulative risk assessment results indicated that risk exposure of the three types of CHMs were unlikely to pose a health risk to consumers. However, more attention should be paid to the multiple residues with the presence of four or more pesticides in one sample and high over-standard rate of pesticides. The pesticide users and the government should pay more attention to the pesticides used in CHMs and regularly monitor the presence of these compounds. The study recommended the MRLs of these pesticides in CHMs should be established and perfected by the relevant departments in China., (© 2024.
